EFAMA and SIFMA hosted an online discussion on Thursday 5 February at 15:00 CET / 09:00 EST exploring practical insights into the US retirement system. This was the second webinar in our pension series, following our in-depth comparison of pay-as-you-go and partly capitalised pension systems.
Given the US retirement system’s emphasis on workplace and private investments to ensure long-term retirement security, this webinar highlighted lessons the EU can incorporate into its ongoing pension market reforms. These include the shift from defined benefits to defined contributions, tax treatment of long-term investments, auto-enrolment and auto-escalation, the retiree’s decumulation phase, and the role of target-date funds.
Several leading US pension experts shared their insights:
- Lisa Bleier, Managing Director and Associate General Counsel, Head of Wealth Management, Retirement and State Government Relations, SIFMA
- Lisa Hunt, Executive Vice President, International Services, Charles Schwab
- Sudipto Banerjee, Global Retirement Strategist, T. Rowe Price
- Andy Budden, Investment Director, Capital Group
This cross-Atlantic exchange was hosted by Andreas Stepnitzka, Deputy Director of Regulatory Policy at EFAMA.
The event was free of charge and open to the public and the media.
